Ways to Save

1. Be prepared:

  • Boxes should be closed and sealed with tape, not bulging on any side.
  • Books and heavy items are in small boxes.
  • Place packed boxes out of the way. Put them in an empty room or the garage.
  • Mark boxes well so they are easily identified as to what room they belong in the new place.
  • Mark fragile boxes clearly. Also, make sure that fragile boxes are full of packing paper or other cushioning to give the box support.
  • Boxes should not weigh over 50 lbs.
  • Clearly mark or set aside items that are not to be moved, or may be delivered to a location other than your new home.

2. Disconnect or disassemble items ahead of time:

  • This includes stereo equipment, computers, cable boxes, and televisions.
  • Furniture – wall units, desk returns, cubicle partitions (unless previously arranged), copier trays and wet toner, and mirrors on dressers.
  • Water or gas lines connected to washers, dryers, or refrigerators. We CANNOT disconnect any of these.

3. Move small, fragile, and important things yourself prior to the move:

  • Lampshades, clocks, statues or collectibles that aren't boxed. These take longer to move than large furniture.
  • Medicine, jewelry, and firearms should be placed in your vehicle prior to our arrival. Important financial papers should be locked away or placed in your vehicle before the move. Basically, anything that may cause you stress if you can't find it within the first 15 minutes at your new home should be kept in your possession at all times.

4. Prepare your furniture to move easily:

  • If your desk drawers come out, they can be left full, except for breakables
    and valuables.
  • Letter and legal files can be left full if the drawers come out.
  • Lateral file drawers should be emptied.
  • The open space in the middle of credenzas must be emptied.
  • Shelves in bookcases that are loose should be taken out and identified.
  • Furniture should be marked as to where it goes in the new space with a sticker or something that will not come off (not a Post-It Note).
  • Dresser drawers can have clothes in them, but not glass, perfume, jewelry, or other fragile things.
  • Open spaces in armoires or tall dressers need to be emptied.
  • Plants should not be watered right before moving.

5. Have your space planned out in your new home/office:

  • Know where your furniture is going before move day and make sure you measure the furniture first if there's a question that it might not fit.
  • Have a schematic of each office taped to the door of the office to assist with putting furniture in its proper place.
  • Be available for questions.
  • If possible, children and dogs should be left with a relative or neighbor.
